From April 2 to 4, CASIB organized the first SuLaMaNET workshop in Germany. This BMBF-funded project aims to develop cooperative approaches in the field of sustainable land management. Eight experts from Kazakhstan and eight from Germany spent three days exploring potential synergies and formats for collaboration.
Land management in Central Asia faces major challenges. These include climate change and strong population growth, which are placing increasing pressure on land use. Various research projects in the region — supported by the BMBF (e.g., CLIENT II, the Central Asia framework program) and other funding institutions — have demonstrated that innovative technologies and approaches can significantly improve the sustainability and efficiency of land use practices.
The aim must now be to build on these scientific results and implement them in practice by establishing long-term cooperation structures. Our planned German-Kazakh Center for Sustainable Land Management (SLM) in Kazakhstan is intended to make a key contribution in this regard.
The workshop program included a day at Martin Luther University in Halle, a visit to a farm near Helmstedt, a tour of the Institute of Soil Science at Leibniz University Hannover, and a cultural visit to the medieval town of Wernigerode.
The next workshop will take place in Almaty to further develop the cooperation concept and move toward the implementation phase.
